VOLUNTEERING - Many people believe they don't have the time to get personally involved or that they have nothing to offer. Everyone has something to offer. Retirees sometimes find the transition from full-time work to 'freedom 55-70' most difficult. I think I will, when the time comes. Many folks have had quite fulfilling careers during their working life. Now what? It's maybe time to take up some new hobbies, spend more time at the ones you already like and of course, spend more time with loved ones. Well, here it is Christmas again. We're all shocked by what happened in Connecticut yesterday. It's maybe time for us all to reflect on what more we can do in our own neighbourhoods. Is there an elderly person in a retirement home you could visit? Maybe there's a need for a relief driver for your local Meals on Wheels. Is there a neighbour who you notice isn't getting out as much. He/she would likely be thrilled to see your friendly face at their door? Perhaps there's a single parent or even a young person living alone without family nearby who would welcome coming over to your place for dinner. Food banks and soup kitchens can always use an extra pair of hands. Sure, writing a cheque for something is needed as there's never enough money for whatever charity you support. But it's likely to have a big impact on someone elses life if you do show an interest and get personally involved. You'll get what I call a 'helper high' when you do too. Sometimes the best gift you could ever give is your time...
